Mission of Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy, an independent, co-educational school for Grades JK-8, encourages students to be life-long learners, develop strong character, serve their community and deepen their faith.

The school community strives to create a challenging and enriching curriculum that celebrates imaginative and intellectual exploration.

Our students learn to serve and become stewards of the community and the environment.

Our program allows students to develop in character and live lives of respect, responsibility and compassion.

Our school culture is based on the Christian virtues of love and acceptance.

Statement of Philosophy: Salisbury Academy strives to prepare students to become well-rounded contributors in their 21st century communities.

Salisbury Academy is an independent school, governed by its own Board of Trustees. The school is financed mainly by tuition payments and charitable contributions and receives no government funding. Salisbury Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. Our commitment to achieving excellence and inspiring innovation attracts high quality teachers and promotes a supportive learning environment.

Salisbury Academy maintains small class sizes, so that teachers can learn about every student and attend to each child’s individual skills and needs. Our teachers form close relationships with students and their parents, and go above and beyond to ensure each student’s success.

Salisbury Academy focuses on educating the whole child, offering learning experiences that reach beyond core academic areas such as math, science, history, and English. As an independent school, we have the freedom to promote creative thinking in hands-on ways and to introduce students to exciting and challenging subjects including art, music, foreign languages, global and environmental education, and technology.

In addition to a rigorous high school and college preparatory curriculum, the Salisbury Academy experience has been crafted to offer experiences in athletics, community service, and leadership training for all. While the school is non-sectarian and welcomes families of all faiths, its tradition is rooted in Christianity. Our students come from diverse backgrounds to develop their interests and a love of learning.

Scholarship
Our school prepares average to very bright, ultimately college-bound students, socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually to become life long learners. Our use of the Core Knowledge sequence provides a foundation for cultural literacy and a broad, global and enriching learning process. We provide challenging experiential activities that promote understanding by doing to enhance our students’ love of learning and to help them to recognize their special gifts and talents. Our graduates are academically curious, ready for accelerated learning, motivated to succeed and eager to become positive contributors to the world around them.

 Faith
Our school seeks a diverse student body without regard to religious belief. The history of our school and its daily actions are rooted in the Christian virtues of love and acceptance. The spiritual development program is based on the premise that all children have a spiritual part of their being that should be nurtured. Chapel is held weekly and classroom Morning Meetings often include a prayer or reading from the Bible or another inspirational resource. Worship time is rooted in Christianity, but seeks to respect the faith perspectives of all who are present in the student body. Students often lead faith-related activities to support their personal growth, encourage open dialog and focus on thought-provoking topics. We believe our respectful environment nurtures positive attitudes toward the spiritual development of each student.

Character
Salisbury Academy is committed to producing responsible, respectful, self sufficient, productive and empowered learners. Because of our selective admission standards and positive atmosphere, discipline problems are rare. Therefore, more time is afforded for developing core virtues and life skills. We intend to produce future stewards of the community and environment. A broad range of exploratory studies, such as ethics, service, leadership, and health, give our students a solid understanding of and appreciation for character development. We want to develop our students’ ethical decision-making, critical thinking skills and inquisitive nature. Our students and alumni are routinely recognized for demonstrating these qualities.

 Community
Valuable components of the Salisbury Academy experience include our commitment to community outreach and service learning. With help from teachers, staff and parents, students design and implement their own projects. Additionally, they are mentored to give their time and talent to various community and individual volunteer efforts. The achievements of our conscientious, involved and caring alumni have confirmed our belief that service is important to students’ learning, faith and character development.
